The answer in 30 seconds
Choose the recording you can recover, not just the camera you can watch.
Local storage can suit owners who want footage kept on a camera card and a supported continuous-recording schedule. Cloud storage can suit owners who want an off-device history accessible through their service. Neither label tells you which moments are recorded or how long they survive.
Compare four things separately: recording mode, retention, outage behaviour and export. Check the exact model, hardware revision and subscription in your country. Then retrieve one ordinary moment and save a usable file before depending on the setup.
A blank timeline is not proof that nothing happened. A camera supports human care; it does not replace it.
Check the route from moment to fileA live picture, an alert, a recording and a saved file are different things.
These promises often sit together on a product page. For an owner checking on a cat, they answer different questions.
Live view
What is in front of this camera now?
Notification
Did a configured trigger send a message?
Recording history
Can I replay the earlier period I need?
Exported file
Can I open and share a saved copy outside the camera app?
One does not establish the others. A push message may arrive without the preceding context you wanted. A live image may work after a trial ends while recorded history no longer does. And an item visible inside an app may not be a durable copy in your own storage.
For selecting camera models and interaction features, see our Petcube Cam 360 versus Furbo Mini360 comparison. This guide has a narrower job: finding and preserving footage after the moment has passed.
Local versus cloud is a storage choice, not a recording mode.
“Local” usually describes where the copy is kept, such as a microSD card. “Continuous” describes when recording happens. A local card can hold only triggered events; a cloud plan must be checked for its actual recording mode. Treat those as two separate settings.
| Question | On-camera local storage | Cloud history |
|---|---|---|
| What is recorded? | Check continuous, scheduled and event options. Inserting a card is not the whole setup. | Check whether history contains triggered clips, continuous footage or another capture mode. |
| What ends retention? | Capacity, recording settings, card condition and overwrite rules. | Plan duration, account status and the service's deletion rules. |
| Where is the copy? | A card inside the camera remains with that device unless separately copied. | A successfully uploaded copy is held off-device, subject to account and service access. |
| What does saving require? | Check app export, network restrictions and supported card-reading methods. | Check download allowance and save important footage before its retention window ends. |
| What costs continue? | Compatible media and eventual replacement; possibly paid features in the same app. | The required plan, number of cameras and any bundle commitment. |
There is no honest universal answer to “how many days fit on this card?” without the camera's recording settings and actual usage. Nor does a monthly payment establish that every second will be available. Keep missing information as a question, not an assumed benefit.
Two examples show why the details matter.
The following are documentary examples, not a product ranking. Tapo information refers to the checked US pages; Petcube plan availability and account terms need confirmation where you live.
Tapo C225 V2: a card and a schedule are separate choices
The US C225 V2 specification lists a separately purchased microSD card up to 512 GB and optional Tapo Care. That capacity is not a promise of a particular number of days. Confirm the hardware revision, compatible media and current firmware before buying a card.
Tapo's recording guide distinguishes continuous recording from detection-triggered recording, with different settings possible across the schedule. Playback also requires the correct storage tab, date and timeline. An empty period can therefore be a configuration issue rather than evidence of an inactive cat.
Petcube Bites 2 Lite: automatic history is not manual live recording
The current Care table lists live view without automatic history on the free tier. Optimal lists three days of history and Premium 90 days; both describe 30-second clips. Those retention periods do not turn event clips into an unbroken recording.
The Bites 2 Lite manual describes motion/sound-triggered Care recording and, separately, manually recording a live session to phone storage. We found no documented on-camera card-recording route in these checked Bites 2 Lite sources. That is a limit of this example, not a claim about every Petcube product.
A purchased camera and a promotional bundle also have different obligations. The Care Bundle terms attach a minimum 12-month subscription commitment to the included hardware. Check the agreement rather than treating “no hardware charge” as “no ongoing cost”.
“Offline” can describe three different failures.
The distinctions below follow Tapo's setup and storage FAQ for a configured camera with working power and enabled SD recording. They are not a promise for every pet camera.
| What failed? | What the documentation supports | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Internet, but local Wi-Fi remains | SD recording and same-network viewing/playback can remain available. | Remote alerts or new cloud uploads continue. |
| Camera connection to the router | Configured SD recording can continue; app access is unavailable. | A remote viewer can immediately retrieve that footage. |
| Camera power | The checked C225 V2 uses mains power. No backup runtime is established here. | A card provides electricity or uninterrupted recording. |
Loop recording can overwrite older card footage. Privacy Mode stops recording and notifications. We found no basis to promise that footage missed by the cloud will automatically upload later.
For the household plan, ask a separate question: who can act if the camera is unreachable? Do not create an outage while relying on the camera for an important observation. Check your arrangement when someone is present and care continues normally.

Follow one ordinary moment all the way to a saved file.
Use an uneventful moment, such as the cat crossing the room. You are checking a workflow, not provoking a reaction or testing the cat. Write down what you actually find.
- Name the moment. Note the displayed date, time and timezone, plus any known clock discrepancy.
- Find the context. Look before and after it in the relevant history. Note missing periods and anything outside the frame.
- Preserve a usable copy. Use the documented export route, then open the result outside the camera app.
- Keep the limits attached. A short note should identify the setup, what is visible and what remains unknown.
- Choose a human next step. Share privately with a carer or vet when useful. Do not delay needed care while trying to recover video.
The export detail that is easy to miss
Tapo's September 2026 download guide distinguishes manual recording, cloud downloads and SD exports. Direct SD downloading generally needs the same Wi-Fi network; no C225 exception is identified. Its Clip & Download segments run from one to ten minutes, which is an export length, not a retention period.
Downloaded items may remain in temporary app storage and disappear when that cache is cleared. Save important footage to the phone's album/storage and confirm the file opens. Expired cloud footage cannot be recovered through that history. Remote playback alone does not establish that direct remote SD export is supported.
A worked example, not a camera test: a saved clip shows one cat entering the feeding area at 18:42, but the bowl is hidden. The defensible note is “entered feeding area; eating not visible”. It is not “ate dinner”. That difference makes the record more useful to the person who visits next.
Build your clip recovery note.
This free worksheet records your observations; it does not inspect a camera, upload footage or verify a timestamp. Unknown fields stay unknown. Revisit it after changing the recording schedule, subscription or relevant app settings.
Keep a clip recovery note
Use this optional note to keep the camera details, visible sequence and unresolved gaps together. It does not inspect footage or decide whether your cat is well.
Only in the current page state: no account, upload or saved browser record. This tool does not send your entries anywhere. Reloading or leaving the page loses them. Copy or download the text if you want to keep it privately.
Exporting this note does not export a video or prove the original recording time. Enter the date, time and timezone as you saw them; keep uncertainty visible.
Text preview
The preview is also available for manual copying. A blank field stays “Not recorded in this note”.

The cat can leave the frame without leaving a clue.
Storage cannot repair an obstructed view. If the cat sleeps behind a sofa, the missing image is about camera coverage, not necessarily the cat's behaviour. A rotating lens also looks in one direction at a time; the ability to turn is not simultaneous visibility of every corner.

Cats Protection discusses recording behaviour while an owner is away as a way to observe changes. Unusual behaviour can have medical causes, so take concerns to a vet rather than treating an alert label as a diagnosis.
Its holiday-care guidance calls for a sitter to visit at least twice daily, with some cats needing more frequent care. Our conclusion is straightforward: a camera is an additional source of information, not a substitute for those visits.
Agree who checks food, water, litter, comfort and the cat in person, and who to contact if something is wrong. Our cat care sheet helps organise that handover. If the cat has a known condition, follow the vet's monitoring and care instructions, not a generic camera checklist.

Keep only the access and footage you need.
The UK National Cyber Security Centre's smart-device guidance recommends checking security support, using strong unique credentials, enabling two-step verification where available and installing updates. Disable remote access if it is unnecessary.
Our household checklist adds practical boundaries: tell carers where cameras are, avoid capturing unnecessary private spaces, review shared access and agree where exported clips will be kept. Do not post identifiable visitors or private household footage as the default way to ask for advice.
A card is not inherently private simply because it is local. A cloud subscription is not a privacy guarantee either. Account access, device security, the location of saved copies and the people allowed to see them remain separate decisions. Longer retention is useful only when you have a reason to keep the material.
Buy for the missing capability, if one remains.
Before replacing a working camera, check whether the gap is a disabled schedule, an expired trial or an unfamiliar export menu. A new device will not automatically solve a poor view or an unclear care arrangement.
If you need local recording, make a shortlist around the exact recording mode, card compatibility, access during outages and export restrictions. Check the manufacturer's supported capacity and endurance requirements before adding a microSD card. A large capacity label alone is not compatibility evidence.

Common questions
Is local or cloud recording better for a cat camera?
Choose by the footage you need to recover. Local recording may provide a suitable on-device history; cloud may provide a suitable off-device history. Verify recording mode, retention and retrieval on the actual setup. Neither is automatically complete, secure or useful.
Does a microSD card mean continuous recording?
No. The camera must support that mode, and the recording schedule must enable it. Review a recent period instead of assuming the card's presence proves coverage.
Can I use a pet camera without a subscription?
Some cameras retain live viewing or local features without one. For the examples documented here, automatic cloud history requires the relevant paid plan; other cameras may differ. Check the exact product and whether you bought standalone hardware or accepted a subscription bundle.
Does no feeding-area clip mean my cat skipped a meal?
No. A missed event, blocked view or absent recording can leave that question unanswered. Record what was visible and arrange an appropriate human check. Do not use missing footage to diagnose appetite or delay veterinary advice.
Should I send my vet a clip?
A relevant clip with its context may help explain what you saw. Ask the practice how to share it privately. The video supplements your account and the vet's assessment; it does not replace an examination or urgent care.
Sources, method and limits
André Ribeiro prepared this documentary comparison from 12 primary references checked on 13 October 2026. No physical camera tests were performed. We measured no detection accuracy, upload delay, image quality, retention duration or outage recovery, and claim no veterinary review.
The comparison questions, retrieval workflow and worksheet are Félinscope's editorial synthesis. Product statements are attributed to the cited manufacturer and limited to the checked model, region or document. The unresolved Tapo cloud wording is preserved as an uncertainty.
